Benefits of Working Out in a Group

What makes working out with a group so great?  Lots of different reasons, all of which are just as important as the next.  I know that when you're thinking about joining a new group it can be a daunting idea - I mean going to a new place with new people to do new things that you may not be very good can be scary.  The important thing is to not let the fear stop you from doing something that you want to do.  Working out with a group offers support, accountability, social connections, and the ability to get a great workout more affordably. 

I have found that sometimes my clients believe the members in their group more than they believe me when it comes to compliments and comments about their improvement.  It's not that they think I'm not telling the truth it's just that things carry more weight if it comes from someone other than 'Mom'.  After all Mom loves us no matter what we do!  Plus it feels really good when a peer notices our improvement.

I love how the group is always interested in each other and how they keep each other WAY more accountable than I can.  When someone misses a workout the entire group asks them "Hey what happened to you the other day?  Where were you?  We missed you."  It's hard to tell your Posse that you just didn't feel like working out because they won't buy it. 

The friendships that have formed in the groups I've taught have been very heartwarming.  Since everyone is there for a common purpose they automatically are one of "us".  It's nice to feel included and a part of a group.  It's fun to listen to the group chatting during the workout about their weekends, their families, their jobs.  When someone has a challenge they all pitch in to offer love and support.  These people were once strangers and now they're going out to the movies with each other!

Another benefit of working out in a group is that the training becomes more affordable for everyone.  Often times clients would love to workout with their trainers more than say once a week but might not be able to afford to.  If the trainer offers a group training option it makes training more affordable and the client gets to workout more oftem with their trainer.  A win - win for everyone!

Keep in mind the bigger the group the lower the cost per person per session which also results in you receiving less individual attention from the trainer.  Conversely the smaller the group the more it will cost per person per session but you'll get more individualized attention.
